Keep the High Street local

The BBC News have been making a big point about towns returning to the local shop "style" to help ensure the High Street survives the recession.

This flies in the face of past government rules that new supermarkets should be in the town. Does this underline the likelihood that if we let Tesco build on the target site, that more businesses would be likely to go bust in the recession.

Does this mean a new retail impact study needs to be taken in the light of current government expectations on the recession depth and its length. Should the Tesco application be stopped pending the general election as it is possible that the new government (whoever that may be) may have very different ideas of how to sustain the local community.

Empty shop premises 'to hit 15%'

Please read the BBC coverage
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8160575.stm

Hadleigh is usually quite fortunate with few empty shops and those not for too long. But if the Retail Consortium's forecast is realised here we will have 15-16 empty shops in the High Street.

Empty shops in the High Street

I think there is some very dubious maths here. If the predictions were correct and we were to have 15 or 16 empty shops that would mean we had 100 now. I don't think so!

Recount

At the last count there were 95 retail premises in Hadleigh. Admittedly that did go beyond the "High Street" but that is just a generic phrase. Probably worth a recount?

"High Street" shops

I think the 95 premises includes fish and chip shops, take-aways, public houses, restaurants, estate agents and antique shops, none of which would necessarily be adversely affected by Tescos, Partridges is also unlikely to be hurt. You know what they say about statistics!
