Tesco extending the High Street

Now this may be a little contentious - but it is just a question. With Tesco planning to open on the Brett Works location, is it likely to bring that half of the High Street back to life. It's always appeared to be less frequented and many shops have been turned into houses. Is it just possible that, as residents start to visit the area more, that existing and new shops can thrive. On the note of shops closing and being turned into houses - I understand this is becoming a major problem in Hadleigh. There are a number of businesses who really need a High Street presence but cannot find any premises. I think the old bed shop is probably the only one available today and I know of two people looking at the moment, but for something a little smaller. Could Tesco arriving actually help increase this stock? What do you think?

Bring more people to Hadleigh

This store has the potential to bring more folk to Hadleigh. I have spoken to a few people in the Boxford area who admitted that they would come to Hadleigh for their shopping if there was a Tesco here. It would be easier for them than going to Sudbury. The key would then be to ensure that their visit was not a one stop shop and that they took time to frequent other retailers in the town. How could Tesco help to promote and encourage this?

Protecting the retail viability of the High Street

Babergh is actively trying to support the retail viability of the existing High Street outlets.

Recently, Babergh's Development Committee turned down an application to convert no. 71 (the ex-beauty salon) from a shop into a financial consultants.

The following statement issued to the media sums up the Committee's decision:

Clare David, Development Control Manager (East) at Babergh District Council, said: "The building is situated within Hadleigh town centre where Local Plan policy seeks to protect the prime shopping area from non-retail uses, and thereby ensure that shopping remains the essential function of the town centre. The proposed use of the building as a financial consultancy as an office use did not comply with the policy - and so it was refused."

protection of retail sector

I understand the need to ensure that retail outlets are maintained in the centre of the High Street. However, would it not be better if they were occupied? I believe that building has been used as an estate agent in recent memory.

That particular premises has been empty for a while now and with the bed shop opposite it the High Street does not look as vibrant as it could. Are there any new retailers interested in coming to Hadleigh or will the shops simply remain empty?

the size of the store

It is anticipated that the proposed store will be on a similar scale to that in Tiptree (14 checkouts). Quite a bit larger than what I had imagined. How is the real size of the store being communicated to the public? Whose responsibilty is it to make people aware of this sort of information?
