Venue: Great Blakenham Village Hall, Nr IPSWICH

1 Consider what effect Tesco will have

1a Tesco will be a threat to our business

1b Tesco will present new opportunities for our business

1c Tesco will benefit the residents in and surrounding Hadleigh

Please add any specific relevant comments on how Tesco will affect the community

“The surrounding countryside will be destroyed or at least blighted. There will be more traffic in the town, which cannot be a good thing. We have all the facilities needed for purchase of food and other goods with local shops, which frankly provide a much better service.”

“It will have an adverse effect on one of the last strong high street village presents locally”

“The creation of the a Tesco store will also have a detrimental affect on the environment - bringing traffic congestion and pollution to the centre of the town, and building on a valuable flood plain.

“A well established and respected business in Hadleigh shouldn’t be fretful of a proposed move to build a Tesco within Hadleigh. I believe that local customers of these businesses will still support them over Tesco's but use the superstore for flexibility!”

“I believe that Tesco, will benefit the people of Hadleigh as they will be able to purchase their basic food products at a cheaper price. However, the negative, and greatest, side of the equation will be the destruction of local retail shops that will be unable to compete with the might of Tesco on price of goods and employment benefits. The High Street will start to decline, unless more niche market shops are opened, but is there the demand for such goods and services in the Hadleigh local area.”

“For TESCO to be an asset in Hadleigh the range of products that they should be allowed to sell needs to be restricted. They should be prevented from selling fresh (i.e. unwrapped) meat and fish; acting as a pharmacy; selling daily newspapers. These restrictions can be applied by planners and should be negotiated by the Hadleigh Chamber as an independent organisation.”

“Location is an issue. This is not town centre (we have a small town) and the links to the High Street are wholly inadequate. This will be a threat to the High Street. Better links could bring a benefit.

“Tesco could benefit the town with cheaper produce, a better range of product and employment. However, the increased traffic could create problems along the high street”

“Increase in HGV traffic in Hadleigh, which is not designed for such traffic”

“Will lead to fewer people in the High Street and closure of some independent shops. It will be detrimental to the river and riverside walk”

“Some will benefit, particularly those without transport/ Others, myself and business may suffer from effects of increased traffic, also loss of some sales”

“There is a general threat that it will draw people away from the High Street”

“Will affect small businesses such as the bakers, greengrocers (general small food retailers). I would rather see a quality food retailer such as Waitrose or Marks and Spencer”

“Will retain and bring new customers to Hadleigh. However, I have concerns that it is not in the centre of town as believed by the planning officer. Connections to the centre of town are important.”
