Dining Room
Guildhall, Hadleigh

(Paid-up Chamber members only)

It is that time again in the current round of the planning application for Brett Works for wider discussion and the Tesco representatives have asked us to arrange an evening meeting where members can talk to them, discuss the perceived benefits and local concerns. This meeting will be primarily to explore concerns and needs in the light of planning approval being given.

Industrial Estate Security

The security onthe Lady Lane Industrial estate has been raised a number of times this year following numerous break-ins and thefts from property in Crockatt Road. I have even heard rumour that one of the businesses is planning moving out of the town as a result.

This is an ideal opprtunity for Babergh, Hadleigh TC and the Chamber to work together to try and solve this issue. The Police are keen to help but reportedly can't do anything on their own. Should this be a Suffolk CC issue (David Grutchfield was trying to sort out CCTV cameras I believe) or is this something that Neil Henry (as Economic Development Officer) could take the lead.

I think there are willing hands that just need a bit of coordination and bringing together. Without something being done Neil will certainly have another obstacle to his role. There are a few Chamber members from the Estate, ourselves at Free-rein included, who would be happy to help.

A partnership approach

A constructive partnership approach is clearly needed to address this issue - and both Babergh and the Chamber of Commerce certainly have important potential roles to play.

The Babergh Crime & Disorder Partnership has a small annual budget aimed at promoting local crime reduction measures. Recently, Babergh has been involved in a scheme at Farthing Road in Sproughton. One lesson from this has been that such schemes can be very expensive and require a great deal of financial and time commitment from those companies involved.

Perhaps a viable starting point might be for the Chamber of Commerce to survey firms on the Lady Lane Industrial Estate to pinpoint more precisely the extent of the problem and the possible commitment of local firms to solving it.

I think that the Chamber should indeed contact Neil Henry to explore this type of approach.

Hope this helps.

A partnership approach

Thank you. I will certainly contact Neil and get something started. Not all companies on the Industrial Estates (and I don't just mean Lady Lane) are members of the Chamber so I will need help with contact names and, always with an eye to the cost effective contact, email addresses.

The Chamber now has regular meetings with members and now with the Police to try and address these issues.

If any businesses who are not members would like to contact me to put their views forward please either call me on 07789 076361 or email me at tony.addison@free-rein.net. I can't promise not trying to sell Chamber membership, but at only £20 per year for a business it does represent fantastic value.

Industrial Estates Business and Security

The Chamber has organised an Industrial Forum on 28 March 2007 to discuss crime and security on the Industrial Estates. The Police, Babergh and the Chamber will all be there.

6 pm at Priory Hall on Benton Street, Hadleigh

Either let Chris Edgar know, if you can attend, on 01473 826090 or call me (Tony Addison) on 07789 076361 or email me at tony.addison@free-rein.net.

Something needs to be done and this may be an opportunity to address the issue properly.
