Business regulation

Babergh's Julian Halls (a Principal Environmnetal Health Officer) took up an invitation yesterday to participate in a seminar, hosted by No. 10 Downing Street, to discuss his and other ideas aimed at lessening the health and safety burden on businesses - without endangering staff, customers and the general public.

Relating it to small businesses

Lessening any legal burden on business is always welcome. However when you run a small business your primary focus is always going to be on the matter of doing business itself, making money and safeguarding the jobs.

Sometimes a small business owner may not realise they need to do something and removing checks and inspections could mean it goes un-noticed. Changes the fire safety rules are an example. Without a visit from a fire officer who would point out missing fire extinguishers etc, they may not be provided.

Reducing inspections and legislation is welcome where it does not affect safety. Where is does it could be replaced by simple, easy to understand rulse, check lists and clear communication. I know we can always get expert advice to help in these situations but that often just adds another expense to the small business.

In summary, we like the idea, but often we don't employ people with sole responsibility as Personnel Officers, Health and Safety Officers etc - so it needs to be simple and obvious what we need to do and how we do it.
