The Community Fire Volunteer (CFV) project has a number of objectives to develop and improve the Community Safety prevention work delivered by Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) in support of the whole time staff
These are:
Our goal is to recruit a team of forty to fifty Community Fire Volunteers we have at this stage recruited and trained twelve CFVs, with a further ten waiting to be interviewed and trained in the autumn. We plan to establish a CFV network that is geographically distributed to provide support in our major population centres. The volunteers receive two days initial training which will then be built upon through ‘on the job’ training as well as regular update training sessions. It is recognised that the ‘Fire’ brand is a strong attraction and gains us access to deliver our Prevention Services, the volunteers are clearly recognisable as they wear a simple but distinctive blue trousers and red polo shirt / sweat shirt uniform clearly marked ‘Community Fire Volunteer’.
The CFV Team will ultimately be used to support the delivery of many of our Prevention Services with each volunteer’s skills and abilities being matched to the services we deliver, however a primary activity we shall use them to support is to deliver the Safer Home Visit (SHV) to targeted vulnerable people in our community. The SHV being the evolution of the Home Fire Safety Check (HFSC) and the Homeshield Plus services. The SHV will also be delivered by all whole-time response staff and the Prevention Practitioners.
The CFV Team are managed by Station Manager Jon Southgate and supported on a day to day basis by our Prevention Co-ordinator Denise Whiting. The CFVs will be available to support station led prevention delivery and we hope will establish close links with local stations and become an integrated part of the wider fire and rescue group that supports our community in Suffolk.
